The best piece of advice I got when I joined my first board about fifteen years ago now was you have to internalize that anything can happen. My own board career has been bookended by pandemic, financial crisis. Also a lot of unique things that have happened to the companies. I had a CEO die in office at SAP Miller. We've had companies that when I joined were trading at $60 a share, go down to $7 Was this company gonna go away? I was on the board of a company, the second largest in the sector, was SAB Miller. Everyone told us there's no way you're gonna get bought by Anheuser Busch. It's impos
I'm Ted Seides, and this is Capital Allocators. My guest on today's show is Baroness Dambisa Moyo, global economist, author, board member, and investor who sits at the intersection of public policy, corporate governance, and capital allocation. Danbisa serves in the UK House of Lords, sits on the boards of Chevron, Starbucks, Conde Nast, and Oxford University's investment committee, is chair of the Economic Club of New York, and oversees Altered Trajectory alongside her husband, Jared Smith, a family office formed after his sale of Qualtrics in 2018. Capital allocators is brought to you by AlphaSense. Here's something for you. Most AI tools today are very good at sounding right. AlphaSense is the AI platform built specifically for this. They own the content, over 500,000,000 curated documents from broke

Back in April on episode four ninety seven, I sat down with Randall Stuttman, the executive coach behind Admired Leadership, who's advised more than 500 CEOs, including some of the most respected names in asset management. Randall introduced me to Alex, an AI leadership coach his team built on forty years of proprietary research into what the best leaders actually do. For investment professionals, that means your entire team gets on demand coaching grounded in the behaviors that drive results and build the kind of followership th
Dambisa, thanks so much for doing this.
Thank you for hosting me.
I'd love you to start with how you describe what you do now.
We can go backwards from there.
The best description is I live at the intersection of public policy because of my House of Lord seat, capital allocation from a corporate space because I sit on large global complex organizations on the boards of those companies. The third piece is looking through the lens of investment through our family office, which was the proceeds of the sale of Qualtrics in 2018. I have feet in different audiences, in different pockets, but we're all dealing with the same things in terms of economic growth. We are all dealing with capital allocation, thinking about returns, headwinds, everything from AI
