Saurabh: Hi. This is the Deco podcast, and I'm your host, Saurabh. Before we begin, views expressed here are personal opinions. None of this is any kind of advice, let alone financial or legal. It's a conversation about things we find interesting.
Episode number 14, Joel is in the house, and we are excited to introduce you to Antonio Garcia Martinez, cofounder of adspindle, a company that has been working towards attributions in crypto. Now he has a very rich background. I'm not so sure whether I'll be able to capture everything, but let me give it a shot at it. So he studied physics at Berkeley. He was a con at Goldman Sachs.
Then he joined the Ad Tech World at Adchemy. Frustrated with the toxic work culture, he founded AdGrok, which was later sold to Twitter. He was the director at Facebook's Ad Exchange. And I think that if you are doom scrolling reels or whatnot at 2 am, 3 am in the night and you do some impulse purchase, I think, Antonio, can be partially blamed for it?
Antonio: Well, I can be blamed for the the seeds of that at Facebook. The current Right. You know, I'm sure is very different than what was built 10 years ago, but, yeah, the first versions of it, put it that way.
Saurabh: After he quit Facebook, he wrote Chaos Monkeys. I mean, both Joel and I are fans of the book and huge shout out to the book. He also worked at Apple for a while. Then he was off the grid for some time. He went to Ukraine for some time.
Yeah. I mean, I'll stop here and let Antonio, you know, who's way smarter and wiser than us, you know, talk a little bit more about himself. And on 1 note, like I want to end it on a note that, you know, people like Antonio, when they choose to spend time in crypto, like let alone talk to us, that is what makes me personally bullish on crypto and tells me that, you know, as an industry we are doing something right. So, Antonio, the floor is yours.
Antonio: Cool. Thanks. Yeah. No. I mean, thanks for that sweeping bio.
It was mostly correct. I think if everything is true, a few things I think were a little bit out of order. That's fine. But, yeah, I mean, you got the highlights right, which is kind of early at Facebook. I built some of the early targeting technology.
Was an adviser at Twitter for a while and some other stuff, and then I kinda checked out. I read a book called Cast Monkeys, which did pretty well, I guess. It's locally famous in some circles. 1 of the funniest things about that is, like, when someone comes up and said they read the book, they don't realize who you are. And you said, yeah, I wrote that.
